Why do I need insurance since all other insured drivers in NC are required to carry uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage?

This was a question we got recently that I had to take a few seconds to formulate a politically correct response...but the question wasn't entirely left field and had some sound logic behind it.  Here's how it breaks down.

North Carolina has an 8% average uninsured motorist rate.  One of the lowest in the country!  Which is great, but can still mean almost 1/10 drivers on the road is uninsured, not to even factor in out of state drivers or random acts of an almost old enough to drive child.  So, why should you have insurance?

• Because there's a chance you'll run into another person just like you, and neither one of you will be          covered.
• Because being uninsured is illegal.
• Because being uninsured means you have no liability protection, and your vehicle will not be repaired.
• Because you have no right to drive without coverage. By choosing to do so, you raise everyone else's costs.
• But mostly, because driving without insurance is dumb. Accidents happen, and if you're at fault and without insurance:
• Court judgments are assessed, wages are garnished, assets are levied, etc.
• Credit ratings are ruined
• A short-sighted decision to save $150 a month could ruin your life for years
• Because others having uninsured motorist coverage does not protect you; the insurance company paying out that uninsured motorist claim will be coming after you to recover their losses (I have done this many times and sometimes it has resulted in bankruptcy for the uninsured motorist).
• Because in many jurisdictions you have no right to sue someone for your injuries if you are uninsured (meaning if I hit you, make you a quadriplegic and you don't have insurance... too bad for you, you are legally barred from recovery).
